New Thailand checked baggage screening procedures take effect on 16 October 2026 at airports across the country, and travellers flying out of Thailand — including from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang — should know what is changing.
What Is New
Under the revised measures announced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), checked baggage may be opened without the passenger being present if screening officers identify items they consider suspicious, prohibited or potentially harmful to aviation safety. TAT stresses that bags will not be routinely opened and that the change is not expected to affect most travellers.
Safeguards
Any inspection is to take place in a designated area under controlled conditions and will be video recorded. Passengers will be notified if their baggage has been opened and inspected.
What to Do Before You Fly
- Use TSA-approved locks on checked bags. These locks can be opened by security staff with a master key, which helps avoid damage to a standard lock if a bag has to be inspected.
- Check the latest baggage and security requirements with your airline and your departure airport before you travel.
- If you have an international connection, also check the rules at your transit and destination airports, as regulations vary between countries.
- Read your airline’s guidance on items that are restricted or prohibited in checked baggage.
Why It Matters for Tourists
Thailand is one of the most visited destinations in Southeast Asia, and many travellers fly home through Phuket or Chiang Mai with souvenirs, duty-free purchases and electronics in their hold luggage. Knowing that a bag can be opened in your absence, and that you will be told if it happens, can reduce stress at the airport. Valuables such as cameras, laptops, medication and documents are best kept in your cabin baggage whenever airline rules allow.
Timing
The announcement was published by TAT on 31 August 2026, giving airlines and passengers several weeks of notice before the 16 October start date. The new procedures apply to air travellers using Thai airports and are part of what TAT describes as ongoing aviation security measures.
Bottom Line
As with any change in airport procedure, details may be clarified by airport operators and airlines closer to the effective date. If you are flying out of Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai or any other Thai airport after 16 October, check your airline’s website and the airport’s passenger information a day or two before departure.
